The Charles Bar in Gastown has a new Summer menu, and last week we were invited along to taste some of their new dishes. Attached to the Woodwards complex in East Vancouver, the place looks fairly unassuming from the street. Inside, patrons can pull up a seat at the bar, or at one of their many cozy booths. With a clean and modern look, The Charles is a cool little spot with great modern pub food.
Pulled Chicken Tacos made with Flour Tortillas a tomato marinated pulled chicken, chipotle cilantro yogurt, sweet corn and bean salsa, and a cabbage blend ($11.50). We loved these tacos so much we asked Chef Kieran for the recipe, but alas he wouldn’t give it up. Instead, he shared this great recipe for Blueprint’s Lime Tomato Pulled Chicken Tacos, which we highly suggest you try making at home.
Jerk Chicken served with two chicken breasts, shoestring yam fries, summer slaw, and pineapple Salsa ($15.75). The fries were delicious, as was the salsa – but we found the chicken slightly dry.
The BBQ Onion Ring Burger is served with a 7oz Prime Rib Patty brushed with BBQ sauce, staked with crisp onion rings, sliced pickles, lettuce, tomato and Parmesan aioli on a brioche bun ($13.85). Definitely not for the faint of heart!
The B.A.L.T.I.C. Sandwich has bacon creamy avocado, crispy Lettuce, juicy tomato, fresh ciabatta bun and paprika spiced Aioli ($10). Although it doesn’t look like much, the flavours were spot on – with creamy avocado and juicy tomato, with a generous amount of crispy, salty bacon.
