New Spot: Chez Christophe

A couple weeks back we had the chance to visit Chez Christophe Chocolaterie & Patisserie, which is located on East Hastings in the Burnaby Heights area.

This isn’t an area we usually go to, however after recently walking up for a visit to Glenburn Soda, we realized how many great little spots there are in this neighbourhood — one of which is Chez Christophe, which just opened its doors a few short weeks ago.

Run by husband and wife duo Christophe and Jessica Bonzon, the shop is an adorable addition to the Heights area, a neighbourhood the two call home.

Christophe is the former pastry chef at Cin Cin, and has always dreamed of opening his own shop.  ”A long time ago, my parents owned their own business as well,” he recently told Burnaby Now. “When I was working for other people, I always thought that I’d do it. I wanted to be my own boss.”

The display case was filled with Chef Christophe’s polished and delectable pastries, cakes and chocolates. It was seriously hard to choose which ones to order… but we managed.

Don’t these cakes look amazing?

Christophe’s Trio Gateau is so shiny, you can almost see your reflection.

Mmm… we’ll have one of everything, please!

We ended up choosing the Mandarine Caramel – caramel and milk chocolate mousse with a heart of mandarin orange. This had a light, velvety texture with a rich, intense taste.

This is the Noix de Coco Verrine – coconut mousse, raspberry, Kalamansi ganache and coconut tuille — a lot of flavour in a little cup! The Kalamansi ganache mixed with raspberry was a luscious experience, indeed.

We also got the Citron Pistache, below – a lemon curd pistachio sponge on a pastry base. This was amazing, and probably our favorite of the three.

Chez Christophe also have a wonderful selection of pastries available, such as chausson aux pommes (apple turnovers), as well as their already-kind-of-famous double baked maple and pecan croissants, which we’ll be sure to try during our next visit.

If you’re in the Heights area and smell the delightful aroma of chocolate and croissants wafting through the air — pop into Chez Christophe and fulfil those cravings!

Be sure to visit Chez Christophe April 23rd to April 25th for Crave, a celebration of the flavours that Burnaby Heights merchants have to offer. Participating restaurants will be offering set $15, $25 and $35 prix-fixe menus so you can discover what some of the best merchants have to offer.
