Bestie Currywurst Now Open In Chinatown

Designed with materials like spruce wood, a slick copper-topped bar and ceramic beer steins, you’d be excused for looking twice while passing by Bestie, a hip new eatery which just touched down in Vancouver’s Eastside neighbourhood of Chinatown.

Located right at Pender and Columbia,  it’s hard not to miss it, really. With much of East Pender not seeing a fresh coat of paint in decades, its glowing white walls will likely grab your attention from the street.

It’s all about the details — the playful custom made tables and benches decorated are designed in a vibrant 1979 Volkswagen colour swatch scheme, and the space is accented with local art, a cuckoo clock and even an orange vintage TV — soon to be playing sports events from the Cold War era. No Canucks games here, sorry.

Owners Clinton and Dane say they created Bestie to share their love of Currywurst and to give food bloggers, food enthusiasts and Vancouverites something to talk about, as there really isn’t much of a “sausage scene” in Vancouver — not that we know of anyway.

Bestie specializes in Currywurst, which is a traditional type of German street fare. The boys are working with a 5th generation master butcher, and using only local and naturally raised free range meats — because local is best, after all.

They don’t stop there either. Bestie makes their own Mayonaise, Sauerkraut, and curried Ketchup.

Now you might be thinking… where’s the bun? Instead it gets covered by a blanket of sauerkraut. Served as a proper German bratwurst, your sausage arrives sliced, and covered in GOOD kosher salt and hot curried ketchup, then placed next to a pile of double fried BC Kennebecs fritten (or fries, if you prefer).

Unfortunately the fryer was having technical difficulties while we were there, meaning we were unable to have the full Bestie experience. It’s okay though, we know we’ll be back!

Bestie is offering 4 different flavors of Currywurst — The Classic Pork Thuringer, Southern BBQ Turkey, Smokey Bison and even a Veggie Wurst, which is made with smoked apple sage seitan and Yukon golds. Hopefully something for everyone to enjoy.

This is Bestie Pretzel Board — warm house-made pretzels served up with “stinky cheese sauce” and little gherkins which we all scarfed down on.

Kohlrabi Kohlslaw with Apple, kale, radish and fancy mustard vin. Adrian liked this one more over the next one.

Jeremy really enjoys beets, and this fresh beet salad with Horseradish, sour cream, dill and green onion was just the ticket. The horseradish gave it a nice kick.

Bestie is currently open 11:30 am – 10 pm Monday to Saturday

Plans for right now state they are “actively seeking an outside prep kitchen and will extend hours as soon as possible!”
